Emergency Kit

When you prepare to head out for your next ATV adventure, be sure to have an emergency kit on hand. Even if you’re a pro rider, emergencies can happen. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Your first aid kit should be stocked with bandages and ointment for scrapes, medication for minor illnesses, and anything else you might need out on the trails. Remember that bug bites, poison ivy exposure, and headaches are more common than you think.

Winch

Although quads are built to tackle rugged terrain, you can still run into traction issues from time to time. Winches are worthwhile investments because they have multiple uses and you’re bound to need one at some point or another. By installing a winch, you’ll be able to easily pull your buddy and his ATV out of a ditch, haul your freshly caught game out of a hollow area to dress it, and much more. Keep in mind that your winch of choice needs to match the power of your ATV or you risk draining the battery. Winches come in either synthetic or wire options so be sure to choose one that’ll best meet your needs.

Protective Gear

You should always wear protective gear when you’re riding your ATV. Protective gear includes a helmet, clothes that cover your body as much as possible, and boots and gloves. With helmets, you should choose either a motocross helmet with goggles for eye protection or a motorcycle helmet with a full face mask. ATV riders tend to prefer motocross helmets because they’re more comfortable and breathable than motorcycle helmets. If you do especially rough trail riding, you might want to consider protective chest and knee plates, too.

Additional Storage

Another great accessory for every ATV is additional storage space. You can often buy aftermarket storage options to increase the amount of cargo you’re able to haul but remember not to exceed your weight limit. With additional storage, you can pack snacks, water, sunscreen, emergency radios, extra clothes, and any other items you might need. This is also a good place to secure valuable items such as your wallet and cell phone. ATVs are small and don’t come with storage space on their own, so adding a cargo box can be a nice upgrade.

GPS

If you’re like most riders and want to wander off the beaten path from time to time, you should invest in a GPS. It’s easy to get lost especially when you’re on the trails and there aren’t clearly marked signs everywhere you go. Everything starts to look the same and you can’t always rely on landmarks to guide you. You might think your phone is sufficient but if you end up in a dead zone, you’re going to wish you had a GPS installed on your ATV.

LEDs

When you add LED lights to your vehicle, it’ll be easier to ride at dawn and dusk with the extra lighting. It’s also fairly easy to get lost in a dark, shady forest so LED lights can help with this as well. Many ATVs come with lights but when you switch them out for LEDs, you’ll have improved visibility and longer bulb life due to less energy use and heat output.
