Beginner Side by Side Riding Tips

Jan. 9 2019 Miscellaneous By ___

Side by side trail riding is a thrilling time. Enjoy all the beauty of nature and the energizing adrenaline rushes that come with powersports riding. If you are new to the sport, you'll want to spruce up on some beginner UTV riding tips to help set yourself up for a smooth and safe ride. We've gathered up advice for newbies below. For all your side by side needs, you can always visit Riva Motorsports Miami. We proudly serve those in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Kendall, Florida.

Stay on Trails

When you explore new areas, you'll see that there are designated trails for off-road vehicles. Stick to them - they are there for a reason! They mark the path you can expect to safely ride your UTV. Venture beyond it and you may end up damaging your side by side (or yourself) in a completely preventable accident. You also will end up damaging the nature that's trying to live there as you kick up plants and tear up dirt. If you are riding on state or federal lands, you could face a fine or even revocation of your ORV license! Only ride your side by side on the dedicated path.

Wear the Equipment

A mantra of powersports users is "dress for the crash, not the ride". In other words, you'll want to be prepared for an accident. If you don't crash, great! If you do crash, you'll be protected. It starts with a well-fitting, crash tested helmet that matches your head size and head shape. Then you'll need eye protection in the form of goggles (ideally with anti-fog and UV protection features). Finally, you'll want sturdy full-length clothing to shield your skin from the elements and any kicked-up debris. If you should crash, your head, eyes, and skin would be protected from the unforgiving ground. Plus, you'll be safer from milder problems such as sunburn or scraping your skin on low-hanging branches

Know Your Side by Side

It's important to be familiar with your given UTV. Make sure you know the sizing specs so you can evaluate whether you'll be able to navigate through a narrow or tight trail. Dedicate time to practicing driving your side by side before you start cruising around trails. You'll want a sense for how your UTV handles, how long it takes to accelerate, how quickly it can come to a stop, and its turning radius. Once you gain a firm handle on this information, you'll be ready to safely explore those trails calling your name!

Share the Trail

Odds are, you won't be the only one out on the trail. As you ride your UTV, be courteous to those you encounter. Follow the proper right of way just like you would in your car on the road. If you are traveling in a group and encounter someone, let them know how many people are behind you. If you are deferring, get over as far as you can to make room. If you discovered poor road conditions, inform those you pass. Do what you can to make the riding experience fun and safe for everyone!
